Pioneer XDJ XZ

Whats up guys and welcome to this blog article. Today we take a look at the controller from Pioneer that needs no introduction.

Most dj’s revere the Pioneer XDJ XZ as the best controller produced to date by Pioneer Dj. With various models available, there is a lot to choose from. When you’re looking for an all in one unit though, this is it! This is the big daddy, the real deal, “the one” so to speak.

What is the main reason why I think every dj should consider the Pioneer XDJ XZ? Its a direct result of the NXS2 setup consisting of the CDJ 2000 NXS2 & DJM 900 NXS2. Now, review the pricing for a used pair of CDJ 2000 nexus (not even the nexus 2), and you will quickly notice that you’ve spent a few grand more than the price for a new controller already. In the end you still need to add a mixer and that will put you way over the budget of a brand new XDJ XZ controller. Lets say you’re buying a CDJ 2000 nexus pair and a DJM 900 nexus mixer (used!). The current market price averages on R83k. Thats an extra R31k right there that you wouldn’t have to spend.

Now I’m not saying that everyone needs to go this route. Many dj’s have tech riders where they prefer cdjs and a mixer. That’s cool, but its not the be all and end all of a professional dj setup. When you look at the functionality, this unit speaks for itself. You get the full club-style layout mixer that resembles a great deal of what you find on the NXS2 setup:

Mixer

  • The mixing panel has 4 channels with channel 3 and 4 switchable between line/phono/pc for rekordbox/serato
  • A fully loaded sound color fx panel with rotaries per channel for independent control
  • Sound fx bank with 14 effects including the all popular echo, delay and flanger
  • Frequency kill buttons for 3 eq bands on the effects applied
  • Beat fx x-pad

The decks

  • Full size jog wheels
  • On jog display for all track information including progress bar, art work and more
  • Jog adjust and vinyl speed adjust
  • Vinyl mode
  • 16 performance pads

The biggest notable difference between the XDJ XZ and the CDJ 2000 NXS2 is the presence of 16 performance pads that can be used for functions like hot cue, beat loop, slip loop and beat jump. This gives the controller an upper hand over the cd players as you have more to work with to that end.

Furthermore the XZ controller has a feedback reducer for both mic inputs with two different settings to choose from. This is a great expansion for djs that use microphones during performances be it vocals or speech.

Let’s check out the official introduction video from Pioneer

The XDJ-XZ is the first all-in-one DJ system to support Pro DJ Link. Connect equipment like CDJs to the 3rd and 4th channels and sync the audio to your mix. Use the XDJ-XZ’s screen to browse the libraries from the external sound sources.
